“Life is short, so smile still you
have teeth”.
This is quite true and in order to smile we need our teeth shining
and sparkling. Hence it is quintessential for a action to be taken ensuring
that “we still have our teeth” for smiling.
The theme of this year’s World Oral health Day is based on this.
Oral
health not only encompasses a healthy teeth but is interrelated with our
overall health. Most of the people worldwide are not aware of this fact. It is
a common perception among people that brushing only twice keeps their teeth and
mouth healthy. But there is more to it.
Bad
oral health leads to formation of biofilms on the teeth consisting of several
types of pathogenic bacteria. These bacteria can enter the bloodstream and
cause various kinds of pulmonary and cardiovascular disease. This can be as
fatal as mouth carcinoma, which occurs among 4 out of 10000 people.
Currently the global burden of the disease is 3.58 billion people suffering
from tooth decay in addition to 486 million children who suffer from
dental caries of primary tooth. It constitutes of 20% health expenditure annually.
The
World Oral Health day campaign for 20th March, 2019 aims at spreading awareness
about the importance of oral health. In addition, the campaign is focused on
ensuring that healthcare professionals play their part in ensuring maximum oral
health and hygiene. We believe that this year's world oral health day will be
successful in making individual be responsible for their own oral health. It
will improve the awareness regarding oral checkups and early oral disease
detection. So, “say cheese and stay chilled” as WOHD has it all sorted….
