We are all quite well-known with the fact that we have one pair of
kidneys and they form the main organ in our excretory system. We have all read
about the structure and the function of kidney in our school text-books. But
that knowledge is locked up in some distant part of our brain. Our kidneys are
“taken for” granted to us and we seldom pay attention to those bean-shaped
structures that relentlessly work to cleanse our precious blood.
The celebration of the World Kidney Day is one such approach which
enables us to give our attention to our kidney one day out of the 365 days. The
World Kidney day is celebrated on 14th March every year. This year the theme is
Kidney health for Everyone Everywhere. Every year the burden of kidney disease
is rising. There are instances of renal failure with a mortality rate of 2.4
million deaths in a year.
The main aim of this campaign is to spread awareness among the people
worldwide related to the increasing prevalence of renal failure not only among
the older population but also among the middle-aged. The motto of the campaign,
Kidney health for Everyone everywhere, needs to be fulfilled by proper
implementation of universal health coverage for everyone around the world. This
will help in detecting kidney malfunctioning at the correct time with early
treatment.
The World Kidney Day intents to aware people about the role that kidney
plays in our daily body functioning. This will improve the rate of annual
kidney screening along with the adoption of a healthy lifestyle with ample
water intake and exercise. In addition, common people, as well as the patients,
need to be made aware of the kidney treatments such as dialysis and
transplantation and their side effects. This will reduce the mortality rate and
will ensure early detection of the disease.
Thus World Kidney Day is a call for healthy living. It calls for a
healthy lifestyle for better today and brighter tomorrow.
