Autism, a very common form of the
developmental disorder, is estimated to be detected in 1 among 59 children
worldwide with a life expectancy of below 40 years. We come across such people
affected with Autism Spectrum Disorder at least once in our life. But do we pay
any special attention to them? Do we try to understand what they are trying to
communicate or take a minute just trying to socialize with them?... no, we do
not..!!!!.. This is not surprising because we all are entangled in our own
niche and do not pay any heed to what’s going on around with the people around
us.
The World Autism Day celebrated on
2nd April is a small effort towards paying attention to contributing towards
helping these misfortunate individuals. This years theme of the World Autism
Day is “Assistive technologies, Active participation”. As per the UN Convention
on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) every person healthy or
disabled has the right to access and exercise their basic human rights and
participate in community activities. Making easy access to assistive
technologies can be a boon to these disabled people in communicating with
people and getting involved in social activities. This can only be possible
with the active participation of all the people worldwide. It should be ensured
through active participation by healthcare professionals and common people
working in close association with ASD affected individuals. They need to make
sure that these people are educated about their rights and they get employment
opportunities. They need to exercise advocacy in ensuring that these people are
heard.
Thus if we work together for these
people we can make sure that they get to exercise their fundamental rights as a
human. This world for all of us...so it is our duty that we make it home for
all of us irrespective of our mental and physical condition.
